Крупная операция Вооруженных сил США против Японии по овладению островом Иводзима [Iwo Jima] на Тихом океане; произошла в феврале - марте 1945. При взятии этого острова размером в 8 кв. миль погибло более 5 тыс. солдат 3-й, 4-й и 5-й дивизий морской пехоты. По знаменитой фотографии пехотинцев, водружающих американский флаг над горой Сирубачи, создан памятник, установленный на Арлингтонском национальном кладбище [Arlington National Cemetery].
